We were appointed by Igloo, award winning developers of the Malings, to improve the landscape along the edge of the estate and have been working with local residents to design a new community garden for the site. Design meetings with the residents’ working group have been held in the pub, developing plans for the site and drawing on gardening expertise within the group to draw up planting schedules for the garden. The group will also be developing a long term strategy for the ongoing maintenance of the garden.
The new planting bays work around the footings of the adjacent site wall – a pre-existing structure that had to be retained. The proposals include new timber planters, screens and ledges for neighbours’ pot plants. Trellis will also be hung along the wall to encourage the climbing plants to green the wall.
We’re working with local joiners and landscapers, and the neighbours of the site are organising a community allotment day to plant the gardens once the fabrication and installation has been completed.
Location: The Malings, Ouseburn, Newcastle
Date: October 2017 –
Planning consent was granted in February 2018. Work on site is due to commence in April, with a planting day planned for early May.
