Our proposal for development on the estate included small-scale and immediate interventions such as removal or replacement of the site fencing, to more significant transformation. These included new infill development to improve the street frontage and better connect the estate into the surrounding street network. The new housing would also subsidise the cost of wider landscape improvements and other community-led initiatives.

The Kilburn Square estate was the result of a regeneration project drawn up in the early 1960s. Fifty years on, plans are being redrawn and proposals considered for another bout of ‘regeneration’. Our approach to the brief for the Nationwide Competition was to challenge the usual measure of regeneration as the cosmetic improvement of the physical environment and to begin a process of developing on the inherent qualities of the area – physical and environmental, economic and social aspects. These were then elaborated as opportunities for development.
